Synopsis
Spongebob and Patrick embark on a journey to get Gary back when the snail gets kidnapped by king Poseidon. My Thoughts
At first I didn’t like the idea of a fully-CGI Spongebob Squarepants movie, but I’ll give it credit for that: the visuals are handled very well, nicely stylized and have great expressions and texture.
However, the visual design of this movie is really where the compliments I can give it ends. The story is a rehash of a much-better earlier episode, and it just overall wasn’t funny. There’s even jokes that literally go nowhere, such as a zombie cowboy showdown that turns out to just be a dream.
It also needlessly ties in to the Camp Coral spinoff series that’s coming out later.
I also don’t really attach any worth to continuity in Spongebob, but it’s worth mentioning that there’s a lot of inconsistencies with previous episodes of the series, such as how Spongebob and Sandy met, etc.
The villain was really underwhelming and is pretty much another recycled version of king Neptune.
Skip this one, the first Spongebob movie is all you need.
