Movie Thoughts: How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

  • Released: 26 March 2010
  • Directed by: Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders
  • Running time: 1 h 38 min
  • Rating 4.5/5

Synopsis

In a culture that’s deadset on destroying dragons, a young Viking boy befriends one of the ferocious beasts.

My Thoughts

Just a pretty much perfect movie. The animation definitely has aged a bit compared to the sequels, but it still looks amazing, just not as polished as they do.

The character of Hiccup is definitely an enjoyable protagonist, and his relationship to Toothless is admirable. The other characters I liked too, though not all of them got a lot of time to shine over here.

What really makes the movie aside from the bond between the boy and his dragon is of course the animation and soundtrack. The Test Drive scene still gives me chills every single time, no matter how many times I watch it.

My one tiny criticism would perhaps be that the “villain”, a giant dragon called the Red Death, is a bit underwhelming, but even then she’s still built up well and is still a great threat to overcome for our protagonists.

Definitely recommend this one, if you somehow haven’t seen it yet.
