Synopsis
Mr. Krabs, Squidward and Gary go to look for SpongeBob when the sponge makes a deal with the Flying Dutchman to turn him into a big boy.
My Thoughts
This one I kinda planned on seeing much earlier, but due to the
English version no longer playing in theaters I had to wait for it to
drop onto streaming. I know the Dutch SpongeBob voices, and they’re
very, very annoying-sounding.
And now that I watched it...yeah, I’m sorry, but I think that this
is yet another forgettable and bad SpongeBob movie. It really seems
that after the first one they stopped trying with these, because I’ve
not liked a single one of these that came out after the first. Some
are worse than others, but this one. Eh.
First of all, the visuals. I don’t like that these movies are
entirely CGI now, especially since some characters don’t even have proper textures. Seriously, Mr.
Krabs and Squidward look like they’re made out of plastic. Some of
the new character designs also really suck. Especially the
three-headed seagull creature late into this movie just straight up
looks like it doesn’t belong in the SpongeBob universe at
all. And it’s feather texture looks like that of a cheap 2008 CGI
movie, not that of a 2020s movie.
Second, the plot feels recycled. The whole "want to be a big boy" aspect and the monstrous deep sea setting feel like they're ripping off from the first movie, and the rollercoaster cowardice feels like it's borrowing heavily from the Roller Cowards episode.
The movie itself was also painfully unfunny and just kinda boring to be honest. I wish I had more to say about it, but it legit just feels like a mediocre movie with nothing all that noteworthy about it.
It's not terrible or anything, but so far I just don't really like any of these SpongeBob movies after the first one.
