My Thoughts

A beautiful film overall. It legit made me tear up quite a few times because it's very emotional, but it's also very intense. Content warning for people who are triggered by these types of topics: This probably isn't the movie for you if hearing or seeing stuff about these topics makes you upset.

I just overall admire this movie for its realistic depiction of depression. As someone who has suffered with this myself in the past (and know other people who have as well), this legit is a very real-feeling depiction of depression. The low lows, but also just the "flat" way it can make you feel, and the awkward conversations surrounding it, and the intense emotions it can bring.

The characters are also very neat and realistic-feeling. Emma was a solid main character, relatable and pretty likable, but also flawed. The other patients she ends up befriending are neat as well. There's also Boudewijn, who is another patient who turns into a semi-love interest of Emma's during her stay at the psychiatric hospital. He is not a great person in the sense that he has terrible anger issues and this destroys most of his relationship, but he still felt like a realistic person, even if he wasn't super likable (though it does need to be said that I really don't see what Emma sees in him).

I also appreciate that despite how dour and dark this movie gets, it is also not devoid of lighter moments. Don't get me wrong, it's not a comedy and it does treat the topics with the seriousness they deserve, but there are also a few lighter moments in the film that I do appreciate. Some funny moments, some awkward but still lighthearted moments, etc. And the ending is thankfully more positive.

This is definitely one of my favorite Dutch movies I've watched so far. Do recommend it if you can handle the dark subject matter.
