Synopsis

Elphaba continues to stand up for the rights of animals, while Glinda is finding her new home as an icon for the people of the Emerald City. How will their story continue?

My Thoughts

I've seen this one get mixed reviews and honestly, I think that this is a worthy followup to the first movie. I liked the first film okay, and this sequel is on roughly the same level if you ask me.

The character development of both Elphaba and Glinda here really is the highlight. These two have a complex relationship and both characters have their ups and their downs, but they are never downright unlikable and I was actively rooting for both characters.

The songs were of a mixed quality, at least as far as my musically untrained ear can tell. I liked some, really loved some, and others were just forgettable. But I do like the music overall.

I also love the many CGI animals in this, as you could probably guess. Their designs are neat and I like how they were animated and how varied they all looked. I just wish there was a wolf among them, haha.

If I do have a criticism it's that it feels like the animal discrimination plotline was just kinda dropped for a while and wasn't focused on at all until the very end of the movie. Which felt a bit weak writing wise, since it was such a big deal in the first movie and the first third or so of this movie as well.

I also like Fiyero fine, but honestly I don't care that much about him. He's an okay character, but I find characters like Glinda and Elphaba way more interesting than him. The final reveal of him being the Scarecrow was also predictable as hell.

Overall a solid followup to the first movie, not great but rather good.
