Synopsis
My Thoughts
This movie just did not work for me. The core issue is simple: I hated these characters and did not care about what happened to them.
Plot is simple enough: They're both reindeer farmers and kill a wolf when it is near the area of their herd and starts attacking their reindeer. Now the town is in uproar over who killed this protected species. The uncle gets caught and lies about killing the wolf (the nephew delivered the final blow) and now has to face the legal consequences, while the nephew feels guilty.
And the core issue here is just that I genuinely don't like these characters. They killed a protected species, they should be facing the consequences for this action. Honestly if I had to pick a favorite character out of this movie, it'd be the wolf. The wolf is just following its natural behavior and the reindeer herders didn't take proper measures to protect their herd without hurting the wolf (there's no fences at all? No livestock guardians dogs, only a small herding dog?). So now I'm genuinely supposed to side with these assholes who killed a protected animal? No, not happening.
The wolf is honestly even barely in the movie, making the title feel a bit deceiving. The movie is more so about the aftermath of them killing the wolf. And it was honestly pretty boring. Since I don't care about the characters. They're just assholes who should face the consequences for killing that wolf.
I also didn't like how they couldn't even afford a real wolf for the few scenes it was used in, so they used a wolf-looking dog or a wolfdog instead. Looked cheap and like they didn't really care. Your audience isn't stupid, they can see the difference between a real wolf and a (wolf)dog.
So yeah. Bad movie. Not the worst thing I've ever seen by a long shot, but also mostly boring and none of the characters (except the wolf and the dog) are likable. Skip this one.
