Movie Thoughts: White Fang and the Hunter (1975)

  • Rating 1/5

Synopsis

Daniel, White Fang and their drunkard friend Dollar return to try to protect a woman from losing her farm to a greedy baron.

My Thoughts

So, okay. This is a sequel to White Fang and the Gold Diggers (1975), but has nothing to do with White Fang (1973) or it's sequel Challenge to White Fang (1974). It gets quite complicated because all of these are Italian movies taking place in the cold north involving a wolfdog played by a German shepherd.

With this movie being connected to Gold Diggers, you'd expect there to be some consistency, huh? Well, no, actually. Sandy has been renamed Daniel, Whisky (the dog) has been renamed White Fang (actually matching the title this time) and now is suddenly a wolfdog rather than just a German shepherd. Sandy's/Daniel's son and love interest are no longer anywhere to be found, so what happened to them is a mystery as big as any. Honestly, the only things that were consistent were Dollar (God I can't stand him) and the awfulness of this movie.

Because god dang, is it bad. The first I think is just a tad worse, but this one is in no way a huge improvement. The cinematography is incompetent (with shots often not lingering on a character doing mundane tasks while another talks offscreen). The dark scenes are shot with such bad lighting and contrast that I almost couldn't make anyone out. The voice acting is terrible (particularly on the kid and monk). The sound effects are consistently repeated to the point of extreme annoyance. God, it just sucks.

This movie also establishes that all wolves in this universe are just German shepherds. In some brief shots they used husky-like dogs to play the wolves, but in all the distinct shots they use German shepherds. I guess wolves like on our universe don't exist in this movie's dimension and instead German shepherds are wolves there. Weird.

The movie was also too long. It was just so boring and had many pointless fight scenes that just go on and on.

So, yeah, definitely skip this one.
