Synopsis
My Thoughts
This is gonna be a short one because I don't have much to say about this one other than positives. This is by far my favorite Apes film I have seen to date. It's just thrilling from start to end and I was continuously engaged in the story and characters.
I really like Caesar having grown much more into his leader role here (something I didn't think felt entirely earned in the first film) and Maurice is still the best. I also think the human characters were decent (though they are still my least favorite aspect of the film). Koba is also by far my favorite villain out of the entire modern trilogy. He is just well-written, and works really well for the story even if his motivations are rather simple. He was legit one of my favorite aspects of the film.
The animation and designs of the apes are still fantastic and I especially love how Maurice looks, I legit thought at first they used a real orangutan for some scenes. But nope, it's all CGI and it's fantastic.
If I did have a complaint it's that, similar to the first movie, there aren't that many female characters, especially not with agency. The most major one we get is Ellie, but among the apes there are basically no female characters of note. Even Cornelia, Caesar's mate, basically isn't a real character and is more so an accessory to her mate than an actual person (er...ape) with her own personality and goals. Just feels a bit unbalanced, I don't need my male/female character balance to be a perfect 50/50 but it just feels kinda unrealistic to have so few female characters of note, basically only one in this large cast of men and male apes.
But that really didn't deter me from loving this movie. I think this is a very strong film regardless and was hooked from beginning to end.
