Synopsis
Based on true events, this film tells the story of Anne Frank's best friend, Hanneli "Hannah" Goslar, in the events of her life leading up to the end of the war.
My Thoughts
Me watching a movie in my native language (Dutch) doesn't happen often but it honestly should happen more. I used to be this snob who dismissed any movie/series that was Dutch because "it's bad" or whatever, but honestly there's some quite good stuff out there. Such as this one.
This movie was competently shot, had great child acting and the story was very emotional and well-told. We see Hannah and her friendship with Anne before being arrested, leading up to the point where she, her father and her younger sister are taken to the exchange camp Bergen-Belsen, the same camp housing Anne at the time, albeit in a different section and under worse circumstances.
We see how Hanneli, despite being more meek and less daring than Anne, is still willing to do anything for her friend who is held at the other side of the barbed wire fence, even delaying her own possible freedom for the sake of bringing Anne food. The two even manage to briefly meet up at either side of the fence for a last moment not long before Anne perishes and the camp is freed.
Obviously a very heavy story, but well-told and it really hits the emotional core of the story: the friendship between Anne and Hannah.
I can definitely recommend this movie if you can handle the darker subject matter. Hannah's story isn't as famous as Anne's, but it absolutely deserves to be told, and is told masterfully here.
