Synopsis
When his father goes into the wilderness to hunt a dangerous bear, a boy goes into the woods in hopes of finding him.My Thoughts
This movie is a prime example of "interesting concept, mixed execution". It did have a few things going for it, such as decent acting, pretty scenery, and solid cinematography. But the rest...eh.
My main problem would be that I simply do not care much about these characters, especially the father. Domenico is a solid enough character, not particularly likable but at the same time you do root for him because he's just a kid looking for his only remaining parent. But the father is just kind of an unlikable asshole, so that instantly diminishes how much the audience is rooting for Domenico to find his father.
The ending where the bear kills Domenico's father also just doesn't hit as hard because of this. Sure, they are father and son, but the father is just not an enjoyable character at all so I didn't feel particularly sad that he died. Sure, it sucks that Domenico is an orphan now, but from an audience POV where they expect us to feel attached to these characters it just didn't really work for me. I honestly kinda felt more sad for the bear, which is just an animal acting like an animal, than for Domenico's father.
The movie does use a real bear by the way, no CGI. It's mostly done through editing tricks. Just thought that was interesting, as nowadays mostly movies would go for CGI instead of real dangerous animals.
So yeah, decent enough movie, but because I didn't like the father character I wasn't all that invested. The bear (the main draw of the movie for me) also barely is in it so if you are watching this hoping for a lot of bear scenes, you'll be disappointed. The main reason to watch this movie is for some pretty Alps scenery as well as the character of Domenico, who is written pretty well. But there's not that much else to it.
