Synopsis
A pampered dog goes to find a new home after ending up on the streets due to his owners death.
My Thoughts
It’s a very standard movie, and I think that’s the best way to describe it. Just, standard. Just showing this dog slowly open up to the life of a normal dog after having been pampered all his life. The overall story wasn’t too grand and we don’t feel like we go on a great journey or anything, but it was okay.
The characters aren’t anything amazing. Trouble goes through a very basic arc, kind of like Chloe from Beverly Hills Chihuahua, but minus most of the good way that was handled. Rousey was honestly the best character out of the movie, somewhat serving as the Delgado of this film. She has a backstory and finally starts to believe in the kindness of humans again after having been discarded by them in the past. There’s more characters, (quite a lot of side characters, actually), but they don’t do too much. Trouble’s new owner is just kind of Generic Nice Girl. The villains are very one-note and boring. Oh, also, Cesar Millan makes a cameo in this movie. I don’t know why. He just does.
The visuals were just kind of generic. The animation itself was good, but nothing stand-out, either. The backgrounds and environments were neat but not very detailed. My main gripes, though, are with the character designs. Not the humans; they look fine, but the dogs. Like was the case with Secret Life of Pets, some of the dog’s faces are just a bit too human like. They have very human-like dental work, too.
Trouble himself also has a very nondescript design. He doesn’t particularly look like a dog that has been pampered all his life, unlike, say, Rex from Royal Corgi. He also has no breed and just looks vaguely like a dog. I think it personally would’ve worked better if he’d had a specific breed, as rich people often crave dogs with pedigrees rather than random mutts. Trouble is also the only dog designed like this, all other dogs have very clear breeds. He also doesn’t have a clear age. His voice is that of an adult, yet his proportions and character design imply that Trouble is still a puppy or early teenager at most. It just makes it very hard to guess how old this character is supposed to be.
Also, on a side note, they re-used one specific model way too much. The grayhound/Dalmatian/Doberman breeds all used the same model with very minor alterations such as texture and ear shape. Most other models aren’t even re-used like this, but for whatever reason they couldn’t be bothered to make multiple models for these breeds.
The humor was very juvenile and not something I laughed at. Yes, there’s potty jokes, it’s a children’s dog movie, what do you expect?
The soundtrack is okay but nothing grand or memorable. There’s a kinda neat song at the very end, but that’s mostly it.
The voice acting was good, but, again, I think it would’ve worked better if they’d have gotten a younger-sounding VA for Trouble, because the current one makes his age seem very up in the air.
Something I do appreciate is that this movie addresses the whole “dangerous pitbull” stereotype with Rousey. It really does show what happens to a lot of these dogs that get adopted, misunderstood or wrongly trained by their owners, and then dumped at the nearest pound for being a “problematic animal”. Rousey is one of the sweetest characters in the movie, so she definitely deserves the happy ending she got.
Trouble is nothing spectacular. Mostly generic in its cast, acting, humor and animation. It has a good message, but is it ultimately worth sitting through the rest of this for?
Not recommended, but not harmful, either. Just a generic animated dog movie, not much lower than Royal Corgi, to be honest.
