Synopsis
My Thoughts
Been watching more Dutch movies recently. I never did much of this when I was young and now I'm kinda regretting it because there is some good stuff made by the Dutch out there.
I think I watched this movie once before years ago, but I didn't pay a lot of attention back then because I genuinely didn't remember most of the details here.
But the movie is actually rather good. It has an emotional core and it does hit hard when it tries to. I've watched other Dutch movies that try to be emotional but just end up missing the mark, but this one was definitely very good in the emotional department, which really is the main appeal of the film as we get attached to these characters (Casper in particular) and relate to their struggles. You just feel for bad so him. His father is absent, his mother is deadly ill and this leaves him unable to pursue his dream of making music.
The cinematography isn't all that impressive and visually this movie isn't much to write home about, but it does look decent enough. Most Dutch productions have this cheaper feel to them but honestly it's fine, not distractedly bad or anything. Just know that visually there are far more interesting movies out there.
The acting was solid though, and the teens in this did a good job. The writing wasn't always great but they did the most with what they were given. Even the forced breakup scene between Casper and Anouk when Sofie's father discovers them they handled rather well.
So yeah, by no means a perfect movie and it does have that classic Dutch cheapness to it, but overall this was a solid and emotional film.
